Conservative MEP Anthea McIntyre has welcomed Mayor Andy Street's initiative in setting up a trade mission from the West Midlands to Canada.

She said the move would put the region first in Canadians' thoughts as they sought opportunities for investment partnerships and commercial collaboration.

The New West Midlands Mayor announced this week that he will personally head the mission, which will be the first of its kind since he took office.

Miss McIntyre, West Midlands MEP and Conservative employment spokesman in the European Parliament, said: "This shows Andy's commitment to expanding our trade horizons and putting the region on the global map.

"I have always said that Brexit will present challenges, but to meet them we must make the most of opportunities to forge business links with new partners outside the EU. Our historic links make Canada a perfect example and a great choice for the first mission.

"We are already among the world leaders in attracting inward investment for expanding our renowned manufacturing base. We also have world-leading brands and talent. This move will put those attractions in the global shop window."
